GIRLS' NIGHT OUT WITH THE BOYS
by Tim Grossman
Staff Writer
I decided to give my youngest daughter an early seventh birthday present by taking her and her 9-year-old sister to their first concert - the Backstreet Boys.
This was like no other concert I have experienced. I'm not sure that I'd call it a "concert" per se, but a concert "experience."
Sure, it was at a concert venue - Glen Helen Blockbuster Pavilion in Devore. But from the moment we entered the theater, the marketing aspects of the phenomenon known as "The Backstreet Boys" became very clear: the target demographic - females 10 and older. I say 10 and older because teens and moms all around us hooted wildly whenever one of the "Boys" appeared on the huge video screen. (I had to crumple up paper wads for our ears.)
The whole event was expertly choreographed, from the live spot for Polaroid and Kellogg's - which took place between the opening act and the Boys' show - to the beautiful "Swan Lake"-styled ballerinas who rose from below the stage during the song, "More Than That." I call it an experience because it was about more than just the songs. It was about getting to know the Boys personally. There were scripted exchanges between every couple of songs where the guys got to play with the audience. They each took turns talking to the audience after their third song. This gave each member time to make their third costume change and gave A.J. an opportunity to thank his fans for their support through his struggle with alcohol.
Nick organized a screaming contest with the crowd while the rest of the group changed into their really cool white zoot suits.
There was a heartfelt tribute to a member of their crew - who was lost on Sept. 11 to the terrorist attack on New York - during which they led the audience in a truly stirring rendition of "America the Beautiful."
Kevin Richardson took some time next to divulge some of the philanthropic indulgences of the band members, which set up "Answer to Our Lives." This featured a video of the rain forests being destroyed and provided an opportunity for Nick Carter to play the drums and Brian Littrell to play the guitar, which both seemed to do well.
But when the Boys began to introduce the members of their backup band, my 7-year-old looked at me with tired eyes and told me that she was ready to leave. My 9-year-old concurred, so we made our way toward the exit.
But, of course the experience was not yet over. There were souvenirs to buy. A $15 T-shirt (the least expensive one) for my 7-year-old and a 1-of-50 limited edition (yeah...right) Backstreet Boys 2001 World Tour backstage pass for my 9-year-old, and we were on our way home.
The Boys are a talented group of performers and gave some inspiringly soulful renditions of many of their tunes including: "Larger Than Life," "I Want it That Way," "Don't Want You Back" and "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely." Their extremely talented backup band performed flawlessly.
My tired girls told me they had a great time, though I think that they probably would have enjoyed more music and less "marketing." Give 'em a couple more years.

Kadie's Encounter With A.J.

Of course we got lost like always, but yeah we finally got there and we got
to park in VIP parking with our passes so that was really cool. We also
found out that we needed to have tickets to get in, and that we couldn't just
use our passes. So we had to pay some tickets. They were pretty expensive,
cause we asked for best available, so they were $130 (around there). BUT
they were 9th row!!!! So we were like oh hell yeah!! We stood in line to
get in for about an hour and a half and I saw a friend from the internet that
we'd met at another show (hey Jen!!! hehe). We finally got in and found out
that the meet & greet started at seven o'clock (before the show) and where to
go. We went to our seats, which kicked ass!!!! Cause the floor seats were
all at an angle, so even with people in front of us we could see perfectly,
espcially standing up. So then we went back to the door for the meet & greet
to wait to get in around six o'clock, cause we had nothing to do. Around
five minutes to seven, the main security guy ( I think ) for BSB came out and
was talking to this lady cause she thought she was supposed to get passes
from The Firm cause they had really bad seats at the last show, anyway...he
came over and looked and Stacy and my passes. He said "do these rip off
easy?" and ripped Stacy's off and then mine. He looked at some other
people's passes and then ours and said "these are fake". I about lost it!!!
I told him that I paid a lot of money cause a girl told me that she got them
from Kellogs and that we didn't come all this way and pay that money for them
to be fake! He said "well I'll be right back, everyone else with a triangle
pass come with me". So he took everyone back for the Meet & Greet. Stacy
and I just stood there, in disbelief and crying really hard. I did not get
myself all worked up about FINALLY meeting the boys, to just not met them.
People kept coming out from the Meet & Greet, crying, all happy, which made
Stacy and I cry even more. Finally around when it was almost over he came
back out and talked to that other lady, and took her inside to talk to her,
and told us that he would be right back to talk to us. She came out and gave
her little girl an autographed picture of the boys, and said that he told her
there was nothing he could do. I was getting even more upset. When the last
of the people came out, about five minutes later he came back out and told us
to come with him. He took us in the lounge, manager office type thing and
asked us to tell him our story. So I told him that I paid money to get this
from a girl who knew someone in Kellogs. He told us that he was really sorry
we had to learn a life lesson this way, and explained to us that no one that
gets these passes ever pays for them. They are always contest winners and
people that know people whatever. Stacy and I were pretty pissed off and
were upset and kinda raising our voices to him. Stacy asked "do the boys
know about this? and what's going on? cause I'm sure that they would want to
do something." The guy practically yelled back to us, saying not to lay this
on the guys or him casue it was not his fault, and that this was happening a
lot and the guys were aware of it. We asked again if there was anything he
could do and he said no. He said the best he could do was get us an
autograph pic of the guys, we said no. That's not what we wanted, that's not
what we came for. We wanted to meet them and say hi, give them a hug.
Finally he said "well if I can drag one of them away, would you be happy with
that?" I said "yes, one of them, I don't care, I want to meet one of them.
I don't care who it is." He said "okay I'll go and try to get one of them
away. I'll bring him in here, wait outside and I'll go get him." So we
went back outside and waited. I didn't think that he would come back cause
we kinda pissed him off. Secretly Stacy wanted it to be Nick, and I wanted
it to be AJ. But we both knew it would be unfair to the other one for one of
us to meet our favorite, so we were hoping it would be Kevin. He came back
out and called us in. I started to shake and was getting nervous about who
it would be. He said "well I got one of them." and put his hand on the door.
He stopped and turned to us and said "who do you think it is?" and we were
like "we don't care!!" and he kept doing that like "well who do you want it
to be? who do you think it is?" and I was thinking 'JUST OPEN THE DAMN
DOOR!!' lol So he opened the door and there was a guy standing on the other
side of the room with his back to us. He was looking out a two-way mirror
thing out to the audience. He was wearing a black t-shirt, some warm-up type
pants, and a black hat. I looked at his arm and saw a tattoo on his arm and
just said "OMG" I put my hand over my mouth and said "OMG" again, and walked
up. He started laughing and was saying "are they laughing?" cause he was
watching the people in the crowd. Then he turned around and I said "hey how
are you?" and he came up and gave me a big hug. I just said OMG again. I
was beaming!!! He gave Stacy a hug and the guy said "AJ these are the girls
that paid for the fake passes." and AJ said "fake passes?" in a cute funny
voice and Stacy said "yeah doesn't that suck?!" and he said "THOSE
BASTARDS!!" all cute like. I told him I liked his shirt and pointed to it
cause it was all black with white letters across the chest that said
PIMPASSMOTHERFUCKER with Johnny Suede in small letters under it. He said
thanks and that he didn't wear it for the Meet & Greet cause there were
little kids there and stuff. We told him thank you so much for doing this.
AJ's phone started to ring and he walked over to a table type bar thing and
set it down and turned it off. Then he asked that guy what the numbers were
for tonight (not sure what he was talking about but I didn't care lol) and
the guy told him and AJ said "DAMNIT! I was two off!" AJ came back over to
us, and I gave him our letters we wrote for all the boys, and then also the
sunglasses that I supposedley got from him 2 years ago. I told him about it
and he kinda looked at them and said "oh cool, well sorry if I don't
remember, I've had so many sunglasses. I told him it was okay, and asked if
he would wear them tonight during the concert. He said "oh yeah sure, I'll
wear them at the beginning of the show" and I said thanks. Stacy told AJ
about our tattoos on our feet, and how her's is like Nick's cause he's her
favorite and mine was like AJ's cause he was my favorite. I was thinking in
my head 'I gotta show him my foot' and I was going to say 'hang on lemme take
off my shoe' BUT it came out "hang on I gotta take off my foot". AJ looked
at me and said "oh no don't do that!" and Stacy laughed and said "your
foot?!" I looked at her and said "OMG I meant my shoe" and I looked at AJ
and said "I'm sorry I'm nervous". So I bent down and took off my shoe (while
I was there, AJ's feet were right next to me, and he had on sandals. I love
the man to death, but his feet were so NASTY!! His toes were really hairy
and his toe nails were long and they had like dirt under them!! I was like
EWW!! lol) and I showed my tattoo to AJ and he looked and said "wow that's
cool" and I said "yeah its like the one of your back". Then the security guy
said "hey I have this polariod here, you guys want a pic?" My mouth just
dropped and I said "oh my gosh, thank you so much." So we put our arms
around AJ to pose for the pic and I said "Tell Nick that his brother hit on
me." and he laughed and said "That doesn't surprise me, Nick does the same
thing." Then I leaned over and smelled him ( I thing I do with guys lol )
and said "Oooo you smell good" and said "Thanks" then I smelled him again
and asked "what is that?" with a smile, cause I KNEW that smell, and I KNEW
what it was. He said "Joop, Joop whatever its called" (pronouncing it both
ways its been said) and I said "I thought so" and then Stacy said "she has
that in her car!" lol Then the guy went to take the pic and said "Oh
there's no film in here!" so he went to a filing cabniet to get some. I
said "that's okay I don't mind putting my arm around him again" and I think
he just smiled and Stacy giggled. AJ asked him if his pants were
Abercrombie and he said yeah and AJ said something like "man I want some of
those". The security guy couldn't figure out how to get the film in, so AJ
turned around to help him, right in front of me and kinda bent over. My eyes
got really big and I just stepped back and was looking at AJ's ass!! :P
hehe Stacy was laughing at me. Then we asked if we could see his tattoos.
He said "sure there's a whole slew of them". So I lifted up his sleeve on
his left arm and looked at those, and Stacy looked at the other arm. I
finally got to see the fire 'JD' one up close. Then he showed us the other
ones on his forearm and explained them to us. I said something like "and the
one of you stomach" and he said "yeah" and lifted up his shirt (my attempt to
just see his tummy hehe) and he said "I don't show this one off that much
anymore cause I'm getting a belly. Ever since I stopped drinking I've been
eating a lot." Then I said "yeah when I heard about that I was upset and
really worried for you, but then I heard you were okay and I was happy." And
Stacy said "Yeah we're really proud of you." (of course I couldn't speak
intelligently lol) And AJ said "Thanks". So we were finally ready to get
our pictures taken I look like an IDIOT cause I was cheesing hardcore cause I
was so excited. He took two, one for Stacy and one for me. We said thank
you again and got hugs from AJ. Stacy said "tell Nick you met his biggest
fan" and AJ said "I will, I'll tell him about the tattoos too" and she said
"thanks." I told him "thank you so much for doing this. it really means a
lot" ( I didn't cry yay!!! lol ). Then I said "oh yeah we'll be in the ninth
row" and he said "ok, I try to look for ya" and then Stacy said "yeah I'll be
sparklin" and shook her boobs (lmao!!) cause she had a sparkly shirt on. I
said "thank you" again and "bye" and stuff. So we went out to our seats, I
was freaking out, and crying at this time, all excited and stuff. And we sat
down, we missed the whole opening acts, but it was okay lol. Stacy started
to cry and I felt bad, cause she didn't get to meet Nick. She was happy that
she got to meet AJ, but she didn't get to meet Nick and I felt really bad for
her. :(

The show started and it was just ahhhh, awesome. Nick looked at us a lot
actually!!! At one point, he went over to AJ and put his arm around him and
pointed right at us, then AJ nodded his head and smiled and pointed right at
us too (kinda like a Nick: is that the ones and AJ was like: yeah them). So
it was awesome!!! I got looks from Kevin, and Howie, and I think a wave from
Brian. I think AJ looked over once or twice. He never wore the sunglasses,
but its okay by me, I didn't mind. :D They had the audience sing "Oh
Beautiful" with them for all the people lost in New York and for America, and
they dedicated "SMTM" to the crew member that they lost. "Don't Want You
Back" rocked. I was totally going crazy during the part in "Everybody" when
Nick plays the guitar, and during "Larger Than Life" Stacy and I were doing
the dance with them and Nick looked right at us and smiled really big. And
then at the end of the show, the did an encore of "Drowning" and around the
end of the song, Stacy and I got up and stood on our chairs so we were very
easily seen. We did the 'I love you' sign with both of our hand way up in
the air and I saw Nick look at us and he did the sign back and kinda pumped
it in the air twice and then he kissed the air. I knew it was for us, and so
did Stacy cause we were the only ones on our chairs doing that sign. So that
made Stacy's night I think. :) I was glad.

When I come to think about, espically after meeting AJ before the concert,
then seeing him in concert, I know the different between Alex and AJ. We
meet Alex, and we saw AJ perform, cause it really is two different people.
Alex was kinda shy, and he talked actually really soft. Yes, his voice was
rough, deep and sexy, but it was in a soft way. And the little lisp was soo
cute. :) But watching AJ perform was totally awesome, and I'm just so
happy that AHHHH I finally got to meet him!!! :*
